I provide therapy for adults who feel blocked in their relationships. Sometimes, even the most successful people feel overwhelmed by what they feel in their private moments–a fight with a partner, a cutting word from an aging parent, a dismissive shrug from a teen. It’s normal to feel stuck. Sometimes the stuck feels hollowed out–like you just want to pull the covers over your head and wait out the storm Sometimes the stuck feels like the storm is inside you–you push, reach out, yell–trying to change things for the better, but instead things get even worse and you can end up feeling hurt, tense, powerless, and alone.
Therapy helps us understand what we feel in those moments and fear it less, even listen to what it is telling us about who we are and what we need. We can then look at the patterns you might get caught in as you try to fix, ignore, or escape a feeling that you haven’t wanted to feel. Shifting those patterns can help you feel more at ease and more like yourself. As things ease, you may even notice deep shifts in old beliefs about how dependable others are, how lovable you are, and how safe the world is.
While I don’t work directly with clients as much as I once did, I am very present in the training, supervision, and support of the therapists at Sage River. So if something in what I’ve said here resonates with you, you might try working with another therapist on our team. We are careful to ensure that everyone at Sage River shows up with presence, warmth, and kindness; and that we all share the same basic sense of what heals the way that human beings hurt.
“I don’t feel very much like Pooh today,” said Pooh.
“There there,” said Piglet.
“I’ll bring you tea and honey until you do.”
